Testimonials
“What I like about the co-op – it means I can live in a wonderful part of the world without being deprived of any of the foods I enjoy. It even lets me support organic and fair trade products so lets me indulge myself with a clear conscience. And to have helpful recipes thrown in too is a great bonus.”
Sue Fogden, Locheport, North Uist
“We are members because we can order such a wide range of organic products. For wheat intolerant people there is a vast range of alternative flours, including buckwheat which makes delicious pancakes; a staple in our house. The co-op is a very convenient way of ordering by post without all the hard work and expense of doing it yourself. Now that it has settled into a monthly routine of ordering and collection it’s a very simple process. And now a delivery service too!! It’s excellent ’shopping on line’.”
Pauline Prior-Pitt, Grenitote, North Uist
“The co-op allows my family access to quality, organic foodstuffs, allowing us to try new products whilst supporting an island based venture.”
Jackie Warner, Kilaulay, South Uist
“Efficient, convenient and cheaper than my previous way of getting slightly unusual items of food here!”
Joyce, Locheport, North Uist
“People working together to get the (organic) produce they want instead of putting up with what they are given in regular shops - superb!”
Martin Johnstone, Grimsay, North Uist
“I find the co-op an easy way of buying eco-friendly washing powders and washing-up liquid etc. in bulk.”
Janet Dix, Grimsay, North Uist
“When we first came to Uist in the ’70s we used to buy Campaign coffee (fair trade) and sell it at the wholesale price to anyone interested in ethical consumerism here. We also combined with neighbours to share bulk orders of wholefoods which we would stock up on during mainland trips, e.g. sacks of wholemeal breadflour or 10kg boxes of organic raisins (when I had a whole family to feed). Happily such expeditions are no longer needed as we can now order from Uist Wholefoods Co-operative - and in more manageable quantities:
- wholefoods, e.g. organic flours, seeds & nuts, muesli base, soya products;
- foods which as far as possible avoid exploitation of workers and producers, e.g. fair trade produce.
The co-operative ethic is one which puts people and the environment before profit, which is an extra reason being part of this local initiative.”
Lorna Hobson, Griminish, Benbecula
“Joining Uist Wholefoods is like opening a larder door to a world of food, ethical shopping and organic choices, at reasonable cost. It is a service by people for people, and proves that non profit-making ventures can work.”
Ursina Hack-MacLellan, Berneray
